Maternal Health
Every minute at least one woman dies from complications related to pregnancy or childbirth - that results in over 529,000 women a year! In many of these cases the death of the woman could have been prevented. The major causes of maternal death are haemorrhaging, anaemia, infection, obstructed labour, hypertensive disorders and unsafe abortions. 99% of these deaths occur in developing countries due to a lack of services and skilled care and also education.
Within our region the rate of maternal death continues to be high. Southern Asia, countries like Cambodia and Laos come only second to Sub-Saharan Africa in tern of maternal deaths. Papua New Guinea also has a high rate of maternal death.
