Each year UN Women Australia and its sub-committees around the country host spring campaign events to raise funds for a specific project.
This year fundraising for the Pacific Facility Fund to End Violence Against Women.
What is The Pacific Facility Fund?
The Pacific Facility Fund fills a critical funding gap by providing much needed financial, development and learning opportunities for individual women’s and grassroots organisations working to end violence against women in the Pacific. Currently working with government departments and community organisations in Fiji, Kiribati, the Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea and Nauru, the fund provides small grants, scholarships and learning opportunities.
About women in the Pacific
Women in the Pacific Region experience some of the highest levels of violence in the world with one in three women reporting physical or sexual violence from their partner.
In Kiribati, 68% of women report at least one act of violence by a partner. In Fiji reports of sexual violence increased by 155% between 2003 and 2007. In the Solomon Islands forced sexual intercourse is the main type of sexual violence and around one in 10 women report physical violence during pregnancy.
The facts:
- Many Pacific women and men believe that men are justified in perpetrating violence against their intimate partners.
- In Kiribati, 68% of women have reported experiencing violence by a partner.
- In Fiji, reports of sexual violence increased by 155% between 2003 and 2007.
- In the Solomon Islands, one in ten women report physical violence during pregnancy.
