Paid Parental Leave an important step to support women

UNIFEM Australia welcomes the introduction of a Paid Parental Leave scheme in the 2009/2010 budget, allowing for up to 18 weeks paid parental leave for the primary care-giver.

This is an important and vital step to ensuring that primary care-givers of children are supported ensuring they are able to maintain their link to the workforce and allowing time for bonding to occur between the primary care-giver and the child.
The introduction of this scheme not only supports individuals and families but Australian society as a whole by ensuring that primary care-givers skills and expertise are preserved.

UNIFEM Australia welcomes the 18 weeks leave given within this scheme, however believes that the delay in introduction of this scheme until 2011 will leave many primary care-givers unsupported in the coming months.

UNIFEM Australia has played an active role in promoting the introduction of Paid Parental Leave into Australia through its participation in the Productivity Commission and ensuring that this important issue not be forgotten in the lead up to the 2009/2010 budget.
